CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP: THE 12 SCIENTIFIC LEVERS OF CONTROLLED INFLUENCE

A study from the University of Lausanne identifies the verbal, emotional and non-verbal tactics that structure charisma – refuting its innate character in favor of an acquired skill.

Charisma, often mythologized as a mysterious gift that grants political leaders, media figures, or executives an almost magnetic influence, is actually a skill that can be broken down and refined. This is the conclusion of a rigorous study conducted by John Antonakis, Marika Fenley, and Sue Liechti (University of Lausanne). Their work, based on two experiments involving senior executives, identifies twelve Charismatic Leadership Tactics (CLTs) that have been shown to be teachable and effective in strengthening natural authority, capturing attention, and the ability to inspire.

« Charisma, the essence of persuasive and motivating leadership, thus loses its aura of mystery to become a manageable behavioral architecture, offering leaders a methodical way to amplify their influence and effectiveness.»

The research identifies three synergistic dimensions. Advanced rhetorical mastery constitutes the first pillar. It encompasses the strategic use of metaphors (“getting bogged down in bureaucratic quagmires”), precise analogies (“a team out of sync is an orchestra without a conductor”), and authentic narratives with strong identification potential. Striking contrasts (“bold vision, deficient execution”), the rule of three for memorization (“observe, analyze, transform”), and mobilizing rhetorical questions (“What legacy do we want to build?”) complete this verbal arsenal.

Strategic emotional connection forms the second pillar. It requires the transparent expression of deeply held moral convictions, strengthening credibility and aligning values. Effective leaders accurately reflect latent collective feelings, creating a powerful sense of belonging. Stating ambitious and inspiring goals, coupled with contagiously confident communication about their achievement, transforms vision into a collective driving force.

Conscious non-verbal orchestration acts as an impact multiplier. Dynamic vocal modulation (rhythm, volume, calculated silences) infuses emotion and power. Authentic facial expressiveness (direct gaze, congruent micro-expressions) and intentional gestures, perfectly synchronized with key points in the speech, reinforce the perception of authenticity and engagement, and facilitate the memorization of the message.

This study represents a major conceptual shift: Locally-Oriented Leadership (LOL) skills are neither innate nor esoteric. They constitute a body of observable, analyzable, and, above all, acquireable skills through learning and contextualized practice. Their gradual and natural integration into a leader’s personal repertoire—avoiding any artifice—proves crucial. Charisma, the essence of persuasive and motivating leadership, thus loses its aura of mystery to become a manageable behavioral framework, offering leaders a methodical path to amplify their influence and effectiveness.

“Charisma is not a gift; it is an art of influence that is cultivated. “
Charisma, that coveted aura, is no longer a mystery reserved for the elite. A study from the University of Lausanne reveals the recipe: 12 Charismatic Leadership Tactics (CLTs), combining eloquence, emotional intelligence, and body language. A practical toolkit, accessible to all who aspire to inspire.

To cite just one example, the late Hassan II, whose masterful influence stemmed from the conscious orchestration of these levers, still delights us with his timeless quotes:

  • “I am a man of principle, but not a man of position.”
  • “If I were to worship anyone other than Allah, it could only be my country.”
  • “If they attack the march, we will eat them.”

And for you, business leaders, executives, managers? Here’s the good news: these TLCs are your daily ally. Whether it’s:

  • To convince the board of directors,
  • Unite your teams around a bold goal,
  • Embodying your brand’s vision in front of investors…

… these techniques can be mastered. There’s no need to master all the nuances from the start: begin with a striking metaphor in a meeting, a calculated silence during a negotiation, or a clearly stated moral conviction.

Little by little, authenticity and practice will make these tactics a reflex – and your leadership a magnetic force.

Charisma isn’t a gift; it’s an art of influence that can be cultivated. So, dear leaders, it’s your turn: draw on these 12 levers and transform your presence into a performance driver.😉
